The nurse we select for this vital role will perform patient-care, education, administration, research and consultation duties. These encompass the administration of chemotherapy; education of patients, families, and nursing staff related to oncology; explaining research protocols to patients and nursing staff; coordinating patient care with other hospital staff members; providing psychosocial support; and participating in the quality-assurance and community cancer-education programs. Additional responsibilities include:
Assisting in the provision of continuity and coordination of care for the cancer patient.
Acquiring and interpreting an accurate patient history.
Performing pertinent physical assessments.
Preparing and administering chemotherapy.
Assisting the physician with treatments and procedures.
Obtaining and interpreting information regarding changes in the patient's condition and making judgments about the subsequent course of action.
Demonstrating sensitivity to the needs of patients and families coping with the processes of death and dying.
Using appropriate consultative services from multidisciplinary nursing staff and other specialists.
Coordinating nursing care with inpatient, home care, and hospice nurses; and other disciplines and agencies.
Participating in multidisciplinary staff conferences and weekly staff meetings.
Assisting with the facilitation of patient/family support groups.
Two or more years of clinical experience in cancer nursing.
Current licensure as a registered nurse in the state of Illinois.
Current CPR and chemotherapy/biotherapy certifications.
Current OCN certification or acquisition of same within six months of hire.
The excellent analytical, written/verbal communication/interpersonal skills essential to resolving problems and working effectively with patients, families, visitors, physicians and other staff members.
Ability to administer chemotherapy in a knowledgeable, skillful, and safe manner.
