Lead Medical Technician will report to the New Port Richey Outpatient Clinic, Outpatient Phlebotomy or Main Laboratory Reception Section of the Pathology & Laboratory Medicine Service (P&LMS), assigned to the duty of leading and coordination up to three or more full time Medical Technicians GS-5. Lead Medical Technician must be available to work various shifts assigned and may be assigned to rotate evenings, nights, and weekend shifts and have rotating days off during staff shortage dependent on service needs. Responsibilities and duties include but are not limited to: Process, compile, record, and report lab tests and/or collection information. Promptly collect specimens, correctly distribute samples, and make lab test results available per orders. Look up and accept patient orders in hospital database and process them in order according to their appointment times. Utilize computer system to label collection tubes and verify correct collection samples for all tests ordered. Perform phlebotomy by venipuncture on patients in patient wards, nursing home facilities, and outpatient labs. Give patients, providers, and family caregivers correct instructions on proper preparation and test collection. Ensure adequate sample testing such as adequate volume, correct storage and packing, and verify they are free from contaminates. Follow established processing guidelines for laboratory testing. Interpret and respond to provider's orders in an accurate and timely manner. Performs other duties as assigned.
