The Lead PUMA will work across service lines and collaborate with multidisciplinary outpatient teams to accomplish primary functions: 1. Coordinate the proper level of inpatient/outpatient care for hospitalized and transitioning patients using utilization management (UM) methodology 2. Educate providers regarding best practice for inpatient/outpatient care. 3. Facilitate quality improvement efforts throughout VA PIHCS to optimize outpatient access and adhere to best practices. 4. S/he may also participate in clinical care, educational activities, administrative duties, and quality improvement efforts. Physician Utilization Management Advisor (PUMA) RESPONSIBILITIES include but not limited to: Be knowledgeable about Standard Episodes of Care (SEOC), training other providers including community and DoD. Enter secondary authorizations, if clinically appropriate Gather, analyze, and present data on important clinical practice and efficiency Establish policies and procedures for care not covered by SEOCs. Review for approval the requests for transfers from outlying hospital, using criteria to include quality of care and cost effectiveness. Works with subject matter experts in VA and community. Has knowledge of resources in the community and creates action plans, working with SC and PC services, when there is a change in access for SC in community.
