The State Veterans' Nursing Home pharmacy program manager oversees all dispensing activities at the State Veterans' Nursing Home in Port Charlotte, Florida. Program manager is responsible for oversight of all medication preparation and distribution, ensure the safe and appropriate use of medications, preparing and submitting various reports to the State Veterans' Nursing Home's administrator and medical director, report medication errors, participates in quality assurance/improvement activities. Major duties include but are not limited to the following: Clinical: Reviews available medication profiles, during medication order verification, for appropriateness of therapy, contraindications to drug use, therapeutic duplication, allergies, adverse drug reactions, drug-drug interactions, drug-food interactions, evidence of drug use/misuse/abuse, compliance, and formulary adherence. Adjusts medications, when appropriate, by discontinuing and/or generating new/renewed prescriptions for items other than controlled substances with the verbal or written approval of a physician or authorized prescriber. Distributive: Maintains oversight and responsibility over medication use process from order entry to medication dispensing. Manages medication procurement and inventory. Prepares billing statements for third party billing, for the State Veterans' Nursing Home's business office. Ensures appropriate medication labeling and storage. Establishes and maintains records of receipt and disposition of all controlled medications. Ensures appropriate dispensing of all controlled substances, after receipt of a legal prescription. Education: Educates resident and or the resident's family on the purpose, proper use, and expected outcomes of prescribed medications. Uses suitable oral, written or audiovisual communication techniques, and verifies through direct feedback, the patient's and/or caregiver's understanding of information presented. Provides both written and oral drug information to physicians, nurses and other associated healthcare professionals. Acts as clinical institutional instructor for professional or technical level pharmacy students and assists in the training of new technicians and pharmacists. Provides in-services to pharmacy staff and other healthcare professionals when required. Participates in or attends continuing educational programs. Administrative: Provides oversight of daily pharmacy operations at State Veterans' Nursing Home. Prioritizes work and makes onsite administrative decisions using pharmacy service policy and procedures, VA regulations, and state and federal pharmacy laws as operational guidance. Provides oversight on work activities of onsite pharmacy technician(s), students and or residents. Performs any duties and or special projects deemed necessary by the Chief, Pharmacy Service.
