This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Education: Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Licensure and Registration. Physicians must possess a current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a state, territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. The physician must maintain current registration in the state of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active, current licensure.. Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences. Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Additional Preferred Requirement: The physician should be Board Certified/Board Eligible in Neurology with special interest in Sleep disorders and clinical neurophysiology Preferred Experience: The ideal candidate will have Board Certification in Neurology with subspecialty experience and board certification in Sleep Medicine. Leadership/Manager Positions. Physician leadership and manager positions may be facility chiefs of staff, directors (i.e., medical center and Veterans Integrated Service Network (VISN)); selected positions in VHA Central Office; and service chiefs or service line managers. Positions are approved for these levels based on the scope and complexity of the assignment and the level of responsibility Service Chief or Line Manager. A service chief or line manager physician must demonstrate the following: (a) Outstanding professional ability in the practice of medicine or a medical specialty; and b) Ability to guide the development and implementation of programs within their respective domain. These programs would include, but are not limited to medical practice, professional standards, personnel issues, and quality and performance improvement. The Physician Supervisor will provide care to the veteran patients in the Neurology Department at the Washington VA Medical Center with particular emphasis on sleep Medicine and clinical neurophysiology. Scope of Position: Scope of Position: Diagnosing, treating and managing veteran patients with Sleep Disorders according to standard, usual and acceptable or customary methods and techniques. Work with physician and technologists in the sleep program within the Department of Neurology. Responsibilities will include sleep clinic, reading sleep studies and teaching sleep fellows. Will participate in reading EEGs(routine and long term and other neurophysiologic studies). Report to the Chief of Neurology related to clinical and departmental responsibilities. Work independently, caring for outpatients in an established sleep specialty clinic. Shall be expected to cooperate with and participate in medical duties or functions related to quality of care review and improvement. May have additional duties as collaborative support technicians and sleep fellows and physician assistants. Work closely and collaboratively with all members of the Sleep Clinic team, and the Neurology department clinical and administrative staff. Will participate in the general Neurology clinic and the inpatient Neurologist service, including ward service duties as Attending physician, and on the inpatient consultation team. Will participate in teaching and supervision of Neurology residents and medical students and other trainees rotating through Neurology service, and outside of the Neurology department within the VA Medical Center Washington DC. Will participate in on-call duties for the Department of Neurology including weekend and evening/night-time hours as needed to fulfill his/her obligations in the clinical care of the patients. Will participate in Sleep telehealth aspects including sleep telehealth visits. Other duties as assigned.
